About

Not all learning happens in the classroom. We are equipping young Americans for life.

Transforming Potential into Achievement

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA is a world-leading youth development program for young people ages 14–24. Built on challenge, purpose, and personal discovery, the Award offers a personalized framework that helps every participant grow into a more confident, capable, and community-minded version of themselves.

As part of a program recognized in more than 120 countries, young people earn a global credential that signals resilience, leadership, and commitment. They also join a worldwide community of high achievers who are shaping their futures—and contributing to a better world.

How the Award Works

The Award is available at three levels—Bronze, Silver, and Gold. At each level, participants set goals and complete activities in four core sections.

Service

Making a positive impact through sustained volunteer work.

Skills

Developing talents, interests, and personal passions.

Physical Recreation

Building motivation, endurance, and lifelong healthy habits.

Adventurous Journey

Collaborating as a team on a challenging expedition in unfamiliar environments.

The Essence of Our Approach

Our philosophy is straightforward: every young person has potential, and the Award helps them unlock it.

  • The experience is personalized—participants choose their own activities and set their own goals.
  • Progress comes through regular, consistent effort, reinforcing discipline and confidence.
  • Award Leaders and Assessors offer guidance, encouragement, and accountability.
  • The framework is flexible and supportive, ensuring young people with different strengths, experiences, and starting points can thrive.
  • The Award strengthens communities by connecting young people with service opportunities, leadership experiences, and shared adventure.

The Award doesn’t define young people by their circumstances—it amplifies their capabilities and supports them in becoming the leaders, thinkers, and changemakers they aspire to be. And we all benefit when the tremendous power of young people is seen, heard, and, critically, recognized!
